Watch Fall Chinook Salmon Jumping Video:

To view you must have QuickTime Player. Download free here. If you are using dialup or this is too slow click here.

The QuickTime jumping salmon video clip was taken on October 19, 2004 at Little Falls on the National Wild and Scenic Illinois River, at approximately river mile 49. Little Falls is the second, smaller and uppermost falls on the river.

The Illinois is the largest tributary of the National Wild and Scenic Rogue River (entering the Rogue at river mile 26) and an important contributor to the world famous salmon and steelhead fishery of the lower Rogue River

All of the Illinois River’s anadromous and resident fish populations are native, naturally reproducing (wild) stocks.  The salmon in the video are wild fall Chinook on their way to their native spawning grounds in the upper Illinois River and its tributaries.  The spectacle of the river’s wild salmon migration has been occurring uninterrupted for many thousands of years.

The Illinois is one of only several rivers in Oregon whose wild stocks have not been subject to hatchery supplementation.  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wild Fish Management Policy states that:

"Wild fish are highly valued as a genetic resource … generally have a greater diversity of life history types and are better adapted to their natural environment – more fit to survive, and reproduce in their natural environment – than are hatchery fish.  The protection of wild fish stocks preserves genetic diversity and management options for the future.  Wild fish are also a heritage that merits protection for asesthetic reasons.”
